About ZiePie
ZiePieBooks wasn't dreamed up in a boardroom. It came out of running bookkeeping for around 200 businesses, and discovering that the platform accounting firms actually need didn't exist.
Our story
I started ZiePie with one goal: helping nonprofit organizations modernize through technology. We rebuilt outdated workflows, automated manual processes, and brought mission-driven teams into the modern era.
Word traveled. Over the next two years we brought the same approach to technology companies, pharma and biotech firms, and management organizations. Different industries, same job: find the friction, remove it.
Then an accounting firm hired us to automate their processes. With my background in accounting and finance, the engagement went deeper than most. Deep enough that the firm eventually asked a bigger question: would we take over their entire bookkeeping operation and automate it from the inside?
We said yes.
The problem
Overnight, we were responsible for the bookkeeping of around 200 businesses spread across QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, and Xero.
The bookkeeping was the easy part. The management nearly broke us. Every status update, every client question, every missing document lived somewhere different: email threads, text messages, WhatsApp chats, scattered notes. There was no single place to see what was done, what was stuck, and what was waiting on a client.
The search
We searched for a platform that handled firm management and bookkeeping together: one system, one source of truth. We couldn't find it.
Xero and QuickBooks Online are amazing products. But they're built for individual businesses running their own operations, not for accountants running hundreds of them at once. The actual work of running a firm, the workflow, clients, team, and deadlines, was always left to a patchwork of other tools.
The decision
It took four years. Four years of building and rebuilding, shaped by the daily reality of running a live bookkeeping operation. But we finally did it.
